Are garter snakes legal pets to have in Illinois? Store bought or from a breeder?

I’ve trying to find it for a few hours. Couldn’t find any information about it. Did anyone else have any luck with it?
I know garter snakes are found in Rockford, but I’m in Chicago. Does that matter?
That might be an issue for when it needs to go to the vet. O.O Unless I go to Indiana for that, and make sure I don’t get a Butler’s Garter Snake.

depends where you live. i lived in CO and we had one and it was perfectly legal

well if you see them out in the bushes and wilderness and no one is making the effort to catch them, they are legal, and not harmful….so i guess they’re legal.

if you do keep them dont tell a soul or let someone see them! people are rats and dont like to tend to their own business. hate to see you get fined or anything else.
