Are pet birds allowed to come into contact with other pets?
By
I vaguely remember reading somewhere that pet birds shouldn’t come into contact with dogs or cats because they carry a disease which can kill them. Is that right? If so, can rabbits and birds come in contact? I have a pet rainbow lorikeet and in the future I would like to have other pets.

Well I have seen lots of videos of people having birds associating with all kinds of animals.
That being said, it is a bit risky. Even dogs or cats that are good friends with a bird can injure it accidentally or even in playful exuberance. If I had a faithful bird I would not want to chance it coming into physical contact with other animals.
But as far as some deadly inherent disease, I am not aware of any as long as the other pet is healthy. To be sure I would do some extensive research on the Internet.

Its not a good idea for other pets to be with birds. Dogs and cats and humans all have things in their saliva that can be harmful to a bird. Rabbits I think would be alright since there is little risk for the rabbit to hurt the bird like with a dog or cat and it isn’t going to be licking it or anything else.

No dogs are fine just no cats. Even if your cat simply touches the bird with it’s paw,you should take the bird to the vet.

I’ve never heard of the disease issue, but birds can be injured by dogs and cats. They should be introduced slowly and watched constantly. Sometimes the bird will hurt the dog or vice versa. They can co exist, with training and a watchful eye. Good luck

It is dog and cat saliva that is deadly..not really a disease. I think that rabbits could, but it’s risky because birds are very fragile.

Cats (and dogs) have bacteria in their saliva which can kill birds. That said, we have a cat and two birds, it just takes extra care to make sure the other animals can’t get into the room the birds are in. Birds are very fragile creatures, and often come out second best in interspecies tussles.
