Can Pet Stores Sell AKC Registered Dogs?
ByI recently went into a pet store where they were advertising AKC registered dogs. Does the American Kennel Club have laws against that and what are they?

As long as both parents are AKC registered they can sell AKC pups. But it has nothing to do with health or show quality.

Yes they can, and the AKC has no laws against this.
So sad, but the AKC makes a lot of money from mill bred pets. Check out the link below about its relationship with commercial and mill breeders.

AKC doesn’t make “laws”. All it does, is take the fee and register the pups. It is not a governing body, merely a registration club for purebred dogs.

All an AKC registration means is that both parents are AKC registered. This, by no means, assures any quality in the puppy, just pureblood heritage.
The vast majority of puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills. The parents of these puppies are AKC registered, but not screened for desired traits or defects, just bred and bred and bred…
If you want a quality purebred puppy, speak to a breeder. If you are looking for a good pet, go check out your local animal shelter. They have many fine dogs there, some of which are even AKC registered themselves.

As Ista said, the AKC is a registration body. They do not govern; they just register dogs.
It is up to the prospective buyer to educate themselves on how to find a quality purebred dog. As others have said, “AKC” does not automatically guarantee quality.

As long as the adult dogs are AKC registered there is nothing that can be done, but most of the puppies in pet stores, AKC or not are usually from puppy mills and you should not buy them, unless the store can prove that they are from a reputable kennel. If they are from a mill they will most likely, but not always have general health problems.

AKC is merely a registration service… it is NO INDICATION OF QUALITY.
No, AKC doesn’t have issues with how pups are sold as long as the paper trail is good, they get their fee and dogs used multiple times have DNA records.

There are some state laws that won’t let you sell dogs in a pet store at all. But when they used to sell dogs they were all AKC registered they weren’t puppymill types.

There are no laws in AKC that are against selling any registered animal as registered. It would be fraud if the pups were not from the identified registered parents though. There are laws against that but it would have to be proven.
There are many Pet Stores that routinely sell AKC registered (legitimately registered) pups.
AKC is a registry and not a policing org. But there are penalties to the unethical breeders if fraud is found out or if an unethical breeder had some of the litter sold and they were actually mixed breed or from sires other than the one indicated. (meaning they could register the litter because a registered sire bred with the dam, BUT another dog may have as well. In this case the litter should not be registered, but some people aren’t ethical and don’t report the incident.)
Advancements in technology will eventually close the windows to that sort of fraud.
