Could our pet cat cause our bird to become sick?

By Cow

We recently took in a stray cat, and ever since our pet bird has not quite been the same. Lately, our parakeet seems to be pretty sick. Spending most of the time on the bottom of his cage, and being very quiet and puffy. The only thing we know the cat has is a severe case of ear mites. Could this be affecting the bird in any way?

I’m no expert about types of mites and what they’re attracted to but it is highly possible. But regardless I think your budgie needs to see a vet asap as it is not normal behaviour to remain sitting on the floor of the cage. Besides it may not be a problem associated with the cat. Best to be safe and sure.

i don’t think so but just to be safe, keep the cat away from the bird, possibly even in different rooms. If I were you I would bring them both to the vet to get medicine for ear mites for the cat and to see if the bird is sick. If you think your bird is sick, it’s important ot bring them to the vet as soon as possible because usually once a bird starts showing signs of illnesses, it could mean that they are severely sick already. Birds in the wild hide signs when they are sick until they are really sick and they can’t really hide it anymore.

I heard that cats have some kind of bacteria saliva that is poisionous to birds but not to the cat itself. I would bring your bird to the vet as soon as possible because without a vet’s help, the bird can die.
