do I have to get certified to be a professional dog trainer?

I was wondering if I have to get certified to become a professional dog trainer in Florida, or can I just apply for a business license.

You don;t have to in Australia although it’s better when you have the certification obviously.

I would think you need something to go on to apply for a business license. Especially if you are getting a loan to start the business. People are going to want something to go on besides “Ive had a dog my entire life.” If you are just getting a business license to get a tax id number than doubt if you need anything.

Ah, yes, you do to be a “professional”. You can, however, advertise dog training and list your years of experience but you cannot use the term “professonal” but if you want to actually earn a living from it, yes, legally you need to be certified.

Yes you need to be certified in every state to become a professional dog trainer. one of the best schools that you can do right from home and in as little as a year have your certificate is Animal Behavorial College, one of my best friends is doing it right now, and i am looking into attending very soon. it is all done online, and works around your own schedule! i would highly recommend that!

No Carol, you do not need to be certified in Fl to be a pro trainer. Who would certify you anyway? There is no state ot federal agency in charge of certifying dog trainers. If you have schooling or training in that area, it would help, but, certification in not a requirement. I am not sure what area of Fl you are in, but, know that there are more people there claiming to be trainers then then are Drs and every one is an “expert”. Good luck to you.

Certification is important to building your business. Without it, how do people know you know how to train???

A professional trainers membership in an association is completely voluntary:
Professional Handlers Association
http://www.phadoghandlers.com/
Professional Retriever Trainers Association
http://www.prta.net/
and on and on.
In reality I could write out a certification for you and it would be just as valid as any other.

It’s best to visit http://www.ccpdt.org/
for more info. A trainer who completes this certification program will have a better chance of keeping business coming in. It also helps if you’re currently training and competing in Obedience, Agility, Rally, or other dog sports – like a resume for other jobs, the titles you earn in these sports help to show your clients what you have achieved.

You have to be certified. You will need to be licensed by the state and I personally will not go to someone unless they are certified. Anyone can claim to know how to train but to be able to charge people money for it and have a reputable business you will need to be certified. Would you go to a guy that claims to be a doctor without first knowing he went to med school and has his md?
