On my second tour in ‘Nam we had Korean and Phillipino bands entertaining us at the different GI clubs. The Koreans played popular U.S. Top 40 songs for us but always finished up with, first, “Arirant” a beautiful traditional Korean song and the Finale was always, “We Gotta Get out of this Place” We all sang along with them.

I saw Eric Burdon perform at a street festival in Hoboken, New Jersey in 2004. His voice hasn’t changed. As powerful as ever. He had a good sense of humor, too.

Deliberate historical urban environmental degradation read: creation of working class ghettos that became city slums is partly what the song refers to. Unofficial US anthem in Vietnam the song overall also captures the alienation between social ideals and day to day practical reality confronting the large numbers of young people in the mid-1960s onwards.
