Rats don't usualy tunnel underground in your yard. Can you see a tunnel? If so it is a mole. Chew some juicy fruit gum and put it in the tunnel. They hate the smell and will leave. If it is a rat set rat traps at night using peanut butter and putting them close to the house. Rats and mice will stay close to the building rather than run out in the open.
