How does animal cruelty affect the animals adoption?

If an animal has been neglected or abused before, how does that affect the animal when it is being adopted?
I’m working on a project with my friend and we just need some facts about that like…we know that sometimes animals have to be put down and can’t be adopted because they are too protective and aggressive with their food.

When animals have been abused or neglected, they usually have trouble trusting their new owner, and they can sometimes be very defensive of themselves or their possesions, causing them to lash out or bite you.

it makes them scared of what is going ot happen ot then next .
