Pet Birds : How to Buy a Parakeet
By
Buying a parakeet involves visiting a local pet store or bird breeder, deciding whether the desired bird should be primarily attractive or primarily friendly and choosing an active bird who looks healthy. Choose a parakeet, and keep the wings clipped for its own safety, with information from a pet hobbyist in this free video on pet care. You left a lot of info out. Like the color of the ceres in determining if it is a male or female. That females are less social and more aggressive as are more like to bite hard. Where as males have a larger vocabulary and are much softer biters and are more friendly. Also how to tell if they are young by the dark colored beaks, black eyes, and strips on their head going all the way to their cere. It is always better to get a young one 6 months and under. You will tame it much easier.

There are actually 21 different species of cockatoos and while I agree that many species of cockatoos may be prone to the problems you described, there are types that are less prone than others. Of those 21, I can think of almost 10 that are commonly available in bird stores so that is actually quite a bit of variety and the differences between species of cockatoos can be as vast as differences between species of parrots. Cockatoos and budgies are only very distantly related.

There’s no such thing as a “regular cockatoo.” Also, what do budgies have to do with cockatoos? How can you be choosing between the two? They are completely unrelated. They are about as closely related as a cat is to a dog.

I would say RESEARCH cockatoo personalities before getting a cockatoo. It’s probably too late, but just know that if you get a cockatoo, you HAVE to pay lots of attention to it. When they are neglected, they get behavioural problems, sometimes very serious ones such as self-mutilating. Cockatoos also have loud cries when they want to be loud, and their feathers create dust. Not to mention they can chew up furniture. Don’t ask this question on Youtube! Go and READ everything you can on them first

I’ve done some research, and yeah, I was really confused as to why on earth people kept calling budgies parakeets. I think that for whatever reason, it’s just gotten into popular culture that these things are also called parakeets. And, yeah, they MAY be parakeets, but it’s almost as bad as taking a beta fish and just saying “To care for your fish…” :/ People really should insist on calling them budgies for the sake of clarity. Not just whatever scientific grouping of bird they’re under.

Actually even fish can be trained. YouTube doesn’t let you post links in the comments so I can only tell you to search “japanese fish swimming in formation” to see that this can be done. I don’t know of many people training fish and keeping them for anything more than decoration but just saying it’s possible.
But when it comes to parrots, they don’t just like training and attention, they need it. They are intelligent social animals. Don’t buy a parrot to keep in cage all day just to look at,

thats really cool. i’ll keep that in mind. tho maybe i;ll clip its wings for the first few weeks to keep it from flying out the door and into the neighbors cat. maybe a few weeks to get it used to me. then there wont be a need for it. i dont really like the thought of clipping wings. =(

i would say budgie

Are you really going to listen to advice from someone who does not even know what a parakeet is? He is holding a budgerigar, a member of the Melopsittacus undulatus species. It is just one of over 90 different species of parakeets.
And what is all this talk about something attractive vs. to play with?? If you only care about it for looks, don’t get a living pet. Buy a picture. Pets are not decorations. Parrots can be tame, friendly, loving companions and should be given the respect they deserve

could you send that to me?
December 20th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
The little “nose” above their beak is the answer.
Blue=Male.
Brown=Female.

look, i keep seeing people saying clip its wings, for a number of reasons. THIS IS NOT NESESARY. i tamed my budgie with out clipped wings, and i have never clipped his wings. if you are resbonsible,and the bird does love you, then you have no need to clips its wings. the bird wont want to leave you. if i leave a room, my budgie flock calls a bit, then i call him, and he flys out to me.
