I have pet allergies and I get shots. I also have NO carpets or curtains in my house. I bathe my Siamese monthly. I bought a Dyson Animal vacuum cleaner.
You can also get a product called Aller Pet.

Miracle Coat makes a mousse type waterless shampoo that you can foam in and wipe off of your cat and dogs. It lessens the amount of allergens, and, used over time, will even reduce the amount of allergens produced by them. You should use it once a week or so. You should also vacuum often, especially if you have carpet, and plan to keep your pets out of the bedroom so that your wife has a “safe” place in your home. Shortness of breath is no joke. Hopefully these tips will help make her more comfortable.

It is more likely the shed saliva from when they give themselves a bath that is a problem, rather than simply the fur.
Your wife needs to consult with an allergist to determine the extent of her allergy. Sometimes an antihistamine works, sometimes an air filtration device, and other times simply keeping them out of the bedroom, so she can sleep in a cat free environment.
All approaches are dependent on how sensitive she is to the allergans. Sometimes it may be as simple as vacuuming.

SHE can take meds or get shots. You shouldn’t have to get rid of them. That wouldn’t be good. Always remember if you have to and you take them to the pound they’ll prob just kill them. Non killl shelters around.
Anyway, check with your vet to see all possible solutions. Change the furnace filter once a month even if you have a 3 month one. Vacuum a lot. Shake the rugs off outside.
Good luck!
