Monkeys evolved from a prosimian ancestor. ‘Prosimian’ literally means ‘before monkeys’, and the group today includes lemurs and galagos, animals considered more primitive primates than monkeys and apes (though of course monkeys did not evolve from any prosimian living today).

If you choose to believe that God created the Earth that is of course entirely up to you, but since your project is for science you may want to use a more scientific explanation of how the planet came to exist.
